Diet & Exercise-- A Fat Girl's Struggle

I was watching Oprah’s “Biggest Loser” show yesterday evening and one of the women who has been able to keep the weight off for I think three years said “I knew how to gain weight, I knew how to lose weight but I didn’t know how to maintain the weight lost.” Well this is me and most likely some you too. I most certainly know how to gain weight, I lost 45lbs (my claim to diet fame) five years ago, but I was not able to maintain that weight loss for more than six months. So I am right back to the lose weight stage.

I do know how to lose weight; I know what I should be eating, what I should not be eating and I know how to exercise. My problem is I love JUNK FOOD and I don’t enjoy working out. I decided to tackle one of these at a time; for me the exercise is easier for me to tackle than my food issues. The diet pill is working out my food issues, for now I think this can work but I am not naive. I know that this may be an issue for me going forward. Exercise is something that I do not enjoy but I know from my last time down this road that exercise is the real key for me. So in spite of what the doctor says I am focusing on exercise.

Believe me, exercise is not easy; my body hurts while I’m doing it and after. I sweat horribly, my rhythm is so off that I can barley keep up with the exercise videos, my breathing is strained and my stamina is low. Everyday I have to force myself to put the DVD in and press play. I prefer exercise because I know it will give me the greatest and fastest results. Plus when I was running years ago there was a time, (perhaps 10 to 12 weeks into my exercise program) when I actually began to really, really feel good. I was able to really run with no problem, my body used to amaze me weekly as my endurance and stamina increased and my body LOOKED GREAT. My exercise program of choice is Leslie Sansone’s “Walk Away the Pounds” and Chalene Johnson’s “Turbo Jam”—these are both great programs for beginners.

If you can walk, you can get with the “Walk Always the Pounds” program it is easy and begins with a low impact 18 minute one- mile walk. The idea is that once you master the one-mile you move on to the two-mile and ultimately the three mile. I began with the two mile walk on Monday, walked three days and while the walk is VERY CHALLENGING, I decided that I could tackle the three-mile. Yesterday was my first 3-mile day and it KICKED MY BEHIND—I was dripping sweat, my arms and legs felt like lead and I was cursing Leslie Sansone out. When the 47-minutes was over I was even a little dizzy; I took a 5-minute rest, dried myself off, drank some water and then I began my “Power Jam” for 25 minutes. Now note that this was very difficult for me to do but I thought about something I’d heard earlier in the day and it gave me instant motivation. Jillian from the “Biggest Loser” told Oprah that what the people do at the ranch—6 hours of exercise a day—is not realistic and not meant for the viewers to emulate—she said that the show gives an illustration of what CAN BE DONE—WHAT IS TRULY POSSIBLE. So I thought about that—if these severely obese people, many of them older than me, most of then larger than me, with health issues—hypertension, high blood pressure, gout, diabetes, busted knees and ankles can do 6 hours of exercise a day—then I can do one hour a day.

So yesterday was my first day doing at least an hour and I will increase my workout by 30-minutes by the end of June. The goal is 90-minutes of exercise a day and my long walk with Alfreda every day.

Faith & Fitness

"The single best way to get fit is with faith" writes Leslie Sansone in her book Walking the Walk: Getting Fit with Faith (FaithWords). I just finished reading an interview with Leslie and found her words interesting and encouraging. What do you think?

"How are fitness and faith related?

Many times when women start a new exercise regime, their willpower fades, and they realize they can't do it alone. They're right! But thankfully, we don't have to. We can ask God to nudge us out of bed and into our sneakers. We can ask him to provide the inner strength and discipline we lack. We can ask him to help us become good stewards of our God-given body. When we find God faithful in this area of our life, we're more prone to depend on him in other areas as well—such as relationships and finances.

I hear from many people who use my walking DVDs in a church group. They get together, pray, and exercise. In our society, where our sedentary lifestyle and increasing obesity are making us sick, a church-sponsored fitness class is a wonderful way to serve our neighbors. And it can be a great open door for conversations about how to become spiritually healthy as well.
Keeping fit also expresses love for God. When we fully appreciate how we're fearfully and wonderfully made in his image, we can't help but be grateful. We can't help but care for the precious vessel God's given us. Being physically healthy also better enables us to serve the people around us—our neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family. In fact, one of the best gifts to give our children is the model of a mom who exercises regularly."

This article made me consider my own faith in myself and God. I began to realize that Leslie is right. I am not alone in this. If God faithfully gives me the strength to get up everyday and conquer all of the obstacles put before me daily then I know he can give me the strength to fight this fat and win once and for all.

Dear God, I admit that I have come to both loveand hate the word "diet."On the one hand, it represents hope for change. On the other hand, it's like a sign flashing "Failure ahead!"I don't want to simply embark on another faulty plan, Lord.I want to embark on a journey with Youthat is led by You and depends on Your power.I can do nothing on my own!Show me the right path that will enable me to change.Show me, as only You, who knows me so intimately, canwhat works for me, what is healthy for me.I want to think of this venture in positive terms, Lord--not that I am signing up to be miserable or in want.I want to learn to redirect my thinking, to feed my bodywhat it truly needs when it truly needs it.And to feed my soul with the Bread of Life--You!Today I place my future, my failures, my setbacks, all of my hopes and plans into Your hands. There alone will I find meaningand true success in my life. Amen

Seven Steps to Permanent Weight Loss

Seven Steps to Permanent Weight Loss
Courtesy of EatingWell.com

Essential core principles of the EatingWell Diet.
The EatingWell Diet is a comprehensive plan designed to help you lose weight safely and permanently. At the core of the plan are seven essential steps-each the result of cutting-edge research, put into practice in real people's lives. They'll work for you too!

Step 1. Make Sure You're Ready for Change Of course you want to lose weight-that's why you are reading this-but in order to make a life plan you can stick with, you must be ready-truly ready-to make the commitment. Losing weight will take some time and effort, and it will require you to make some sacrifices. (If it were easy, everyone would be thin!) The first step is to make sure you're ready to get started.

Step 2. Set Goals The next step on your weight-loss journey is to decide what kind of weight loss makes sense for you. Weigh in, assess your eating habits and make a game plan. That will include long-term goals and more immediate goals too.

Step 3. Track YourselfSelf-awareness is self-motivation: by keeping track of your behavior, you motivate yourself to change because you become more accountable. Track yourself with a food diary and exercise log-some of the most powerful tools for managing your weight.

Step 4. Eat MindfullyHealthy eating means getting a variety of foods in moderation-not making any food forbidden, but not going overboard on those rich foods that were once special-occasion indulgences. Eat mindfully by knowing the foods that make weight loss easier, and understanding key healthy-eating principles.

Step 5. Commit to Move MoreExercise makes weight loss much easier-but more important, people who move more are more likely to keep the pounds off. No matter where you're at now, you can become "an exercise person."

Step 6. Get SupportLosing weight is challenging-we can't expect to do it alone. As you make your way through losing weight, you'll need to cultivate a network of friends, family, co-workers, professionals and like-minded dieters.

Step 7. Have a Long-Term Plan As you reach your weight-loss goals, you're ready for the final step: creating a long-term strategy that will help your successes stick for good.

After Holiday Update

So I went to Maryland for the holiday weekend and I think I did okay. I ate a little of this and a little of that but I did not over indulge. I also got my workout on this weekend. Alfreda and I went for a long walk-- 45mins before I left for MD on Saturday. I walked in the Mall with my mother for over three hours on Sunday and Monday when I got back to NY, I walked away the pounds with Leslie Sansone-30mins and I did 25 mins of power jam. I made up for the stuff I ate this weekend.

The exercise plan for this week has to be kicked up. I know me and the walking alone will not help me much so the new daily plan is:

30-45 minute walk with Alfreda
30 min 2 mile walk away the pounds with Leslie Sansone
25 min power jam

I need to sweat and get some real fat burn in. I will keep you posted.

Ten Fitness Facts Women Should Know

These ten fitness facts were sent to me from discoveryhealth.com. I thought they were quite interesting.

Getting in shape? Learn 10 fitness facts that will help motivate you to get moving.

Fitness Fact 1. Studies have suggested that walking at a brisk pace for three or more hours a week can reduce your risk for coronary heart disease by 65 percent.

Fitness Fact 2. About 25 percent of American adults — and an even greater percentage of women — are sedentary. After age 44, upwards of 30 percent of women are sedentary, and by age 65, the proportion increases to almost 35 percent. By the time they reach age 75, about 50 percent of all women are sedentary.

Fitness Fact 3. Only about 22 percent of American adults engage in regular, sustained physical activity for at least 30 minutes five times a week, and only 15 percent exercise both regularly and vigorously.

Fitness Fact 4. No matter how poor your current level of fitness, you can start an exercise routine and become fitter and healthier. Even 90-year-old women who use walkers have been shown in studies to benefit from light weight training.

Fitness Fact 5. Simply adding movement into your daily routine can increase your level of fitness. For example, if you park in the last row of the parking lot and walk briskly five minutes each way between your office and your car, walk up and down the stairs at your office during your 10-minute afternoon coffee break, and walk the dog for 10 minutes when you get home, you've racked up 30 minutes of exercise for the day.

Fitness Fact 6. Women with heart disease or arthritis actually experience improved daily function from involvement in various modes of physical activity.

Fitness Fact 7. Fitness consists of four components: your body's ability to use oxygen as a source of energy, which translates into cardiovascular fitness; muscular strength and endurance; flexibility; and body composition.

Fitness Fact 8. To address all the components of fitness, an exercise program needs to include aerobic exercise, which is continuous repetitive movement of large muscle groups that raises your heart rate; weight lifting or strength training; and flexibility exercises or stretching.

Fitness Fact 9. Walking at a brisk pace (a 15-minute mile or 4 mph) burns almost as many calories as jogging for the same distance. The benefit of jogging is that it takes less time to cover the same distance and it benefits the bones; however, it may be too strenuous for some.

Fitness Fact 10. It takes about 12 weeks after starting an exercise program to see measurable changes in your body. However, before 12 weeks, you will notice an increase in your strength and endurance.

Sassy Water

I made some Sassy Water last night and I've been drinking it all day. It doesn't taste bad at all.
While I am not doing the Flat Belly diet, I thought Sassy Water would be a great addition to my
current plan. It can't hurt. Try it and let me know. The Flat Belly diet maintains that you can lose your belly if you drink Sassy Water while on the diet. For more info check out--
http://www.prevention.com/cda/categorypage.do?channel=weight.loss&category=flat.belly.diet

If you have a problem with water retention Sassy Water will help.

Sassy Water
2 liters water (about 8 1/2 cups)
1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
1 medium cucumber. peeled and thinly sliced
1 medium lemon thinly sliced
12 small spearmint leaves

Day Three

Today was my best day yet. I got out of the bed at 8:15 and immediately went to prepare my breakfast. I did laundry today, so I was moving around a lot; it took all day to finish. When all of the clothes were washed, Alfreda and I went to the laundry to dry it all. When the clothes were in the dryer we went for our walk. Today, we walked up and down a few hills and I felt it all over. I felt it because over the past three days my total consumption of calories was approximately 3600. My body is used to close to 3600 a day so I know I was going through some type of withdrawal or something. I felt slightly weak while we walked. Today I had a headache for a little while as well. I know it has something to do with the diet. All in all today was a good day. I am still doing it so today was great!

Breakfast
3/4 cup of corn flakes
1 cup skim milk
oven broiled salmon
mixed berries, mango and melon salad
1 cup detox tea

Lunch
Frozen dinner
fruit salad with yogurt

Dinner
Salmon
Streamed Spinach
Sleepy time tea

Snack
1 pack david's sunflower seeds

I know have not eaten enough food today but I am not hungry. I get a few extra calories from Crystal Light- 5 calories per serving, chewing gum-25 calories and 3 ginger drops total 58 calories. I will do better tomorrow.

Day Two

Day two began at 12:00 pm-- side effect of the pills. This will pass in about a week or two as my body gets used to the pills.

Breakfast at 12:45 pm
3/4 bowl of corn flakes
skim milk
mixed berries
one hard boiled egg

Snack- 3;30 pm
6 pieces of melba toast
one wedge of laughing cow spreadable Swiss cheese

Lunch- 6:30
Chicken breast
large mixed greens salad

Dinner
This is where I had a little problem- I never got hungry again so I had a hard boiled egg, mixed berries with almond slivers, 6 pieces of melba toast and one wedge of laughing cow.

Snack
Oreo cookies 100 calorie pack

I actually did not get 1200 calories today which is not a good thing. I had about 1000 calories today. I will be closer to 1200 tomorrow because I am getting up no later than 9:00 am and I'm going to eat-- even if I go right back to sleep. My meals will get better soon because I went food shopping today.

Alfreda and I walked about 45 mins today. Tomorrow, my goal is to stick as close as possible to the plan-- 1200 calories, 3 meals, 2 snacks, and 30 mins walking. No more no less.

What the Hell am I Taking

Since my day officially began at noon, I had a whole lot of catching up to do. I decided that I would do a little research on the appetite suppressant I'm taking.

First, I read the information from the Pharmacist--"Phendimetrazine *Program Tab 35MG- Why is it prescribed? For short-term management of obesity. I hate that word!! OBESITY!! It just sounds so severe. I couldn't possibly be obese. Wikipedia defines obesity as "a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse affect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy Body mass index (BMI), which compares weight and height, is used to define a person as overweight (pre-obese) when their BMI is between 25 kg/m2 and 30 kg/m2 and obese when it is greater than 30 kg/m2." My BMI is currently 36 kg/m2, with that BMI at my age I weigh more than 91% of comparable American women. Okay, I am OFFICIALLY OBESE. You can check your BMI at http://www.halls.md/body-mass-index/bmi.htm

Now that I know I have a real diagnosis, I need to understand the Phendimetrazine better.
"Phendimetrazine is "used in the short-term treatment of obesity. The appetite-reducing effect tends to decrease after a few weeks. Because of this, the medicine is useful only during the first few weeks of a weight-loss program. This sympathomimetic appetite suppressant can help you to lose weight while you are learning new ways to eat and to exercise. Changes in eating habits and activity level must be developed and continued long-term in order for you to continue losing weight and to keep the lost weight from returning."

I ended my research right here. This was my plan. I just want to use the pills for a little kick start. I know that in order for me to be successful at this I have to change the way I view and consume food and I also know that exercise has to become a constant part of my daily life. The crazy thing is I actually enjoy the way I feel when I'm working out. Why is it so hard for me to begin and commit to a diet and exercise plan? I probably will never understand the why of this and it really does not matter. I just have to do it. I have to do it to live.

Please hold me accountable as I travel along this journey.

Day One Part Two

Okay so I guess I was wrong, the pills kept me up all damn night. I wasn't wired up like I was on those other pills but I was WIDE awake. I stayed up planning my diet for the next two weeks, writing my food shopping lists, watching two DVD's and then I got desperate and started watching a "Snapped" marathon on the tv-- (Clayton better watch it). At about 4:30 am I turned everything off and got in the bed.

I tried to get up when the phone rang the first time at 8:45 and I tried again at 10:00. I didn't get up until my girlfriend Brandy called at 12:00. I'm just gonna deal with the not sleeping for a few days because the pills are working and I have no other side effects.

Although, as I stayed up all night and could not sleep I began to get hungry so I had hot tea and one hard boiled egg. I had so much tea yesterday that I was in the bathroom all day and night. I'm gonna lay off the tea today because I just took the water pill and I have to go out today.

Oh and my honey is so sweet. I told him about the diet and the pills and he said "you don't need that, you just need to get a bike and come riding with me." I told him that I gained 50lbs since we met in 2002 and he said he couldn't tell. He said he loves me the way I am but if I'm not happy he'll do whatever he needs to help me. Then he said "baby buy some Jello, you can eat as much as you want for zero calories"-- I just laughed. Ya'll know I love him!

I will update again tonight.

Day One

Today was the first day of my new diet. I've been down this road before so I know what I'm supposed to be doing and how I'm supposed to do it. But I still struggle with doing it.

Yesterday I did something I said I would never do again. I went to a diet doctor for prescription appetite suppressants. I sat through an hour long "diet orientation" with the doctor where he explained how we gain weight and what we need to do to lose it-- all of the things I already knew but seldom practiced. He gave me a 1200 calorie diet, instructed me to walk 30 mins a day-- no more-- no less, and advised me not to drink any carbonated beverages. My blood pressure, height and weight were taken. I received 14 appetite pills (phendimetrazine) and 2 water pills and was instructed to return a week later. Before walking out of the office I promised myself that I would follow the program and make this the last time I would embark on a weight loss journey.

Breakfast
3/4 cup of corn flakes with skim milk
small cup of blueberries/strawberries/ black berries and cantaloupe topped with almond slivers
1 hard boiled egg

Lunch
Smart Ones frozen dinner
cup of yogurt and berries

Dinner
2 pieces of grilled chicken
string beans
1/2 biscuit

I took the first pill before lunch and the second pill before dinner. I don't feel like I've taken anything so that's good. I'm not wired up or dizzy; I like this new diet pill. Overall day one of my diet went very well. Initially, I was feeling so lazy that I wasn't going to walk outside for 30 mins. I was going to walk in the house with the DVD. But I decided that I really needed to walk outside because the walk would mark the beginning of my new journey. I walked with my dog, Alfreda for about 40 mins this evening before dinner. Right now it's after midnight and I should be in bed but I figured that beginning this Blog will help me continue and hopefully keep me focused on this journey. I'm hopeful and very excited.

Weight 5/17/2009- 244.6 lbs
