Day 18

Wednesday, I woke up with a larger than life pimple on my face courtesy of the candy bar I ate the day before. I just carried on. I drank my juice, water and ginger tea all day and thought about my fast all day. Why was I doing this? Was this maybe a bit extreme? All kinds of thoughts went through my head and I decided that I would break the fast but not go back to any animal protein or heavy carbohydrates until the 30 days was up. I realized that I was feeling like I was depriving myself. On Monday and Tuesday I drank less water and juice than I had up to that point and I was struggling to drink the juice even when I was hungry. I had a few episodes of dizziness and then I chugged some juice.  I think I can finish the next 12 days eating all veggies and drinking live juices, water and ginger tea.

Day 17

Tuesday wasn't too bad until I went and got that candy bar and ate it. I broke my fast, for no damn reason at all. I just went and got a snicker with almonds and devoured it. I immediately got a head rush and needed water, lots of water. I had my water and went right back to my juice for dinner that evening.

Day 16

Monday was a struggle. I wasn't caving food, sweets or warm coffee; I just didn't want any juice. I had no real appetite so I forced myself to drink all day long and by the time I went to bed, I still had 16 ounces to drink.

The other strange thing yesterday was I had two Tonsil Stones. I read a few blogs where folks have noted that they've had increased tonsil stones during various types of detox regiments. I hardly ever get them but I do get them from time to time so I can't be sure that they are from the detox.

Day 15

Halfway there! Fifteen days down and fifteen to go! I'm very pleased!

Day 14

Nothing to report except that I am so pleased with myself to have completed 14 days.

Day 13

I don't have anything at all to report. Things are moving right along, no major developments. The only real issue I have is I am missing social events.  Everything we do involves food so I'm not going out anyplace.  Even my shopping involves food -- eating crap at the mall, going to the trendy super market with all of the hot food bars, or just going to SAM's or Costco's and loading up on free samples.  I was toying with the idea of seeing a movie today but we are so conditioned to have that hot buttered popcorn with a movie that I decided to stay home.  It's a bit isolating but I'll deal. I'm noticing that I'm reading and meditating more than ever and I keep watching movies like Fat Sick and Nearly Dead and Forks Over Knives.

Oh, The Man and my roommate are also fasting so that's making it easier. I don't have to cook for him and I don't have to smell her food. One night, I think my second day into the fast, my roomie cooked some salmon (and I'm picky about my salmon) but it SMELLED DIVINE!  She almost broke me that night but I pushed through and I'm glad I did. While the weight is dropping off ( about a pound a day) one of the immediate benefits of this fast is reinforcement of how powerfully strong the mind is.  After the first three or four days I think this thing was totally mental. I am believing that this fast is renewing and strengthening my mind and helping me to see that I have the power to have enough self control to have a healthy, functional relationship with food.

Day 12

Today I had a terrible allergy attack that lasted almost throughout the entire day. It was more severe than my attacks typically are during this time of the year, it was very much like a Spring allergy attack. Sipping some ginger tea gave me some relief but not enough.  I was miserable most of the day, thankfully I drove because if I went into the sneezing and nose blowing on the Metro folks would have been giving me the stinky side eye with the Ebola virus hovering around now.  Allegra became my friend again when I got home. So, I'm back on my allergy meds.

I think I know what happened. Yesterday I forgot my carafe of ginger tea home and was really craving something nice a warm on the cold wet morning, when I got to work. I should have and could have had a nice cup of tea but I opted for a cup of coffee, with soy and two Splenda.  I think this did it.  A friend of mine cautioned me about removing food groups from my diet. She said that every time she removed a one when it was time to incorporate it back her body had really strange reactions.  I suppose something is bound to happen when you remove ALL foods groups from your diet.

Outside of this, all is very well with this juice fast.

Day 11

This was my first day having the Ouri's Fruit and I really enjoyed it. I selected the Believer Cleanse.
The website says the following:
For those who've cleansed before, and is already accustomed to a healthy living lifestyle, we recommend the Believer cleanse. It’s a deep cleanse, without being too harsh.

3 Days, 6 Juices per day

  1. Sweet Greens
  2. Pineapple Apple Mint
  3. Detox Greens
  4. Spicy Lemonade
  5. Sweet Greens
  6. Coconut Fusion
I really enjoy these juices. They taste great! I don't have a favorite because they all are good. I'm staying the course with this fast and feeling good.

Day 10

Ten days in and still going strong with relatively no problems. It sort of becomes easier each day but then one day I'll get a really strong urge to eat something, anything. That's when I drink more juice or get a stick of gum and that feeling passes on. It's not easy not eating but it's not a constant challenge either.  This experience has highlighted just how much mindless eating I do daily. I don't need more than half of the food I typically eat daily. Hopefully, when this is all over this will stick with me and help me to make smarter food choices.

I am beginning to consider how I'm going to transition back to eating whole foods and what role live-juices can realistically play in my life daily.  Right now I'm almost cheating with the fast because I'm not preparing the juices myself. This makes it so much easier for me to stay focused on the fast and not have to worry about the time and energy it would take for me to juice daily on my own.

Initially, I purchased a 7 day juice fast from Groupon for Khepra's Raw Food Juice Bar and by the second day I decided that I wanted to go for a full 30 days.  My initial purchase was $175 and you also pay taxes of $27 when you pick up the juice (a great bargain). Without a Groupon I would pay twice that amount. I couldn't afford that. So I looked for a mail order option and found a three day juice cleanse for two people on Groupon from Ouri's Fruit (Juice in the Raw). The cleanse was $169 plus $58 for shipping to my front door. This would get me through 13 days, almost half way through. There would be two days between when my juice would be delivered and me finishing the first seven days of juice.  I supplemented by purchasing fresh juice from Wegman's and some cold pressed juice from Traded Joes. So I ended up with enough juice for 15 days. I went back on Groupon and got another 14 day fast for Khepra's for about $314.

Purchasing the juice makes this fast really doable for me for 30 days but moving forward I'd have to begin to juice at home to incorporate a green juice into my daily meal plans.  I'll just have to dust off the Breville or Cuisinart and get to juicing every three days. If I decide to replace one meal a day with a green juice I could juice twice a week and have enough juice or I could juice once a week and freeze four days of juice.  Either way, it's very doable without taking up too much time and energy.

I notice something new almost every other day.  On Day 10 I noticed that my usually oily skin (facial) is no longer oily.  I have a nice glow all day but I'm not shinning from excess oil on my skin. I typically stay away from facial makeup because my skin is so oily that I end up looking really shinny and eye shadow creases, almost runs, and smudges. I like this, not having oily skin!

Day 9

Unfortunately or fortunately, I don't have anything to report. All is well and I am still on this juice fast!

Day 8

When I woke up in the morning I had a terrible allergy attack. Mucus was everywhere and I was constantly sneezing; nose and ears itching complete with watery red eyes. I couldn't understand what had happened. I decided to make a huge pot of ginger tea because I did not want to take any allergy medication. I sipped tea for about two hours and then all of the allergy symptoms went away. It was strange because I hadn't had any bad allergy symptoms since I started the fast.

I thought about what could have triggered that type of reaction and figured that it might be the cranberry juice I'd had the day before. Out side of a stick of gum and water it was the only thing I'd had that wasn't a fresh- living juice, fresh coconut water and nut milks. I'm not sure but I think it was the juice, it had artificial flavors and colors and a whole lot of sugar. Or it could have just been something in the air. In any event, that was the morning and early afternoon of day eight.

Nothing else eventful happened on day 8.  I keep forgetting to note that one of the other "side effects" of this fast/ detox is feeling cold ALL THE TIME. This is especially bad for me as I am anemic and I am always cold already. I literally stayed on the sofa  two covers, in PJs, thick socks, and a robe for most of the day trying to get warm. I also  put the heat up to 78 degrees. It was chilly out at 50 some odd degrees but it wasn't that cold. I toyed with the idea of lighting a fire but I didn't want everyone else to really suffer because I'm on a juice fast.

Day Seven

One week down, three weeks and two days to go! I'm feeling really good about this fast. In the first week I'm down 9 pounds, have less mucus, less allergies, even softer ,and I wake up refreshed and ready for my day. I'm  no longer dragging myself out of the bed. While I have yet to get that "renewed energy" some folks get, I'm pleased with these initial results.

On day seven I decided that I needed to kick this detox up a notch so I went to a Korean Spa in Baltimore County, Seoul Spa  . I love the place, you pay about $30 and get the use of a number of Saunas, baths and  poultice rooms. There was groupon available so I only paid $17.  Since I had been juicing for a week I didn't think I should stay in the heated rooms for an extended period of time. The plan was to hit one of the dry heated rooms for 20 minutes, a steam room for 20 minutes, and then bathe and leave. I kind of stuck to the plan. I stayed in the dry heat for a bout 35 minutes, the steam room for about 10 minutes and them I showered and left.

The detox was immediate. I decided I would not leave the dry heat until I had sweat pouring from my entire body. I took a book in the room with me and alternated between reading and just laying out in the heat. My book was soaking wet when I walked out of the room but I felt great. I sat in one of the comfortable massage chairs for a while and then went on to the steam. I dipped in the hot bath with the big tea bag (yes, tea bag) in it first. Then on to the steam. I prefer the dry heat and since I dipped in the hot bath I couldn't really tell how much I was sweating and how much was just wet skin. I left rather quickly, showered, dressed and prepared to leave.

As soon as I walked out to the main hallway and the cool air hit me I felt weak. I went into the Spa's restaurant and ordered a water and cranberry juice (my first non- fresh, non- living juice).   I quickly downed the juice, then the water, and left. When I got into the car I drank the green juice that I brought with me for lunch. I felt better but I was still weak and sweating about an hour later as I walked through  the mall in Columbia. I ended up in Wegman's buying a 32-ounce green juice that I drank in three our four gulps. I continued to drink water, run to the bathroom at every stop and handle all of my errands. I did well.

On day seven I also decided to cook for The Man. I'd realized that I had not cooked for him in over a week and I didn't know what he was eating. His favorite food is red beans and rice, I paired that with a roasted chicken and was going to make a broccoli slaw salad.  I knew I was strong enough to make the food and not eat because I am READY to complete this 30 day fast!  I cooked and all went well. I did taste the water for the rice to ensure that I had the right amount of seasonings.  The water was damn good!

The Man enjoyed his home cooked meal and I enjoyed my papaya, guava and sour sap (my least favorite one) juice for dinner.

Day Six

All is well.

I still don't have much of anything to report except that I am still on this fast. I plan to be on this fast for the next 24 days.

Day Five Update

Things are still moving along with minimal issues. There is nothing major to report but I noticed the following by Day 5:

1. My skin is softer; it's very very soft
2. Less Mucus
3. No real issues with my allergies
4. Weight loss - 9 pounds as of this morning
5. Bathroom, bathroom, bathroom all day and night
6. Gas, primarily at night
7. Strange stomach grumbling sounds

Last night I monitored my sleep with the fit bit and I had 29 restless sleep minutes and 17 awake minutes (running to the bathroom). Both of those minutes need to decrease.

Overall, I'm pleased and decided to extend this fast for 30 days.

Day 4

Day four and no new revelations.  I'm not having new detox symptoms and I'm not noticing anything more than the decrease of mucus. In a few days there will be more detox symptoms. Last night, I think I didn't sleep too well. It feels like I'm up all night long running to the bathroom and I'm not quite sure that I'm getting much rest in between trips. Tonight I'll wear my Fitbit to bed and it will monitor my sleep pattern.

I plan on posting everyday, even if I have a "boring" or "dull" juice fast day. As I go along I'm certain that I'll have much more to report.

WAIT!!! How could I forget this? I lost 8 POUNDS in the first four days of this fast. I'm sure that my weight loss will taper off as I move along but it looks and feels good when the scale goes down. I started at 225 pounds and today I was 217. I'll take that!

Juice Fast Juice Feast Day 3

So yesterday was my third day and all went very well.  I woke up with less mucus, didn't get hungry throughout the day and I began to make a conscious effort  to drink more water. Still no real detox symptoms during the day but I'm sure they'll be here in a day or two.

Shortly after my second bottle of juice I went to the bathroom and my urine was dark.  Too dark. I'm used to almost clear urine. That was a clear indication that I needed to increase my water intake. It's difficult because I'm already drinking 96 ounces of juice, I have to travel to and from work, and I actually have to work; all of the liquid keeps me running to the bathroom. I decided to try to take some water with each bottle of juice. I was watching some youtube videos and folks say you should take equal amounts of juice and water. This will be a major challenge for me but I'm trying. Since one of the primary reasons for this juice fast is detox I need to flush the toxins out of my system and water is the only thing that will get the job done.

I mentioned yesterday that I would begin taking enemas to aid in the detoxification. I've done a great deal of reading on the benefits of taking enemas while juice fasting and decided that I would make it a routine process and take one every other day.  That decision was made before I actually gave myself the enema. Now the reality is this wasn't my first enema. I have Crohn's disease and I've had to prepare for my annual colonoscopy since 2001. So this was supposed to be a breeze. NOT!!!

Since the plan was to take an enema every other day I purchased an enema bag and two gallons of distilled water. I warmed two cups of distilled water in the microwave and then cooled it with one cup of room temperature distilled water, I dissolved some sea salt and added the juice of one lime. I don't know if it's because I'm already detoxing or what, but I was unable to hold the water for long each time I tried and then when it was time to release I felt tingling in my feet and legs. Actually, it was more than tingling, my legs and feet became very weak, my legs felt like rubber, the way they feel after a great orgasm. The only problem was -- NO ORGASM! LOL! I released a lot of mucus and bile. I felt so dirty and weak afterward that I took a nice hot shower.  When I walked out of the bathroom I felt like I wouldn't be able to hold myself up for long. I ended up laying it down and reading my bible a while before officially turning in.

While I didn't have any detox symptoms yesterday, I didn't sleep well at all last night. The first two days I slept very well but last night I kept waking up to go to the bathroom and the really interfered with my sleep.  It's because I increased my water intake. Hopefully, this will get better as time moves along.

Day 2 Juice Fast

I'm actually on day three but I'm reporting out on day two.  Yesterday was a breeze. I wasn't hungry at all and the low grade headache that I had on Sunday didn't come back.  I'm not having too many detox symptoms yet and I'm not really sure why. I had been eating all types of dairy and baked goods prior to this fast and actually had very little fruit and vegetables in the days leading up to this fast, so I'm expecting the symptoms to come on soon.  In the past when I did a juice fast I ate raw for a few days prior to beginning; things may get really bad in the next day or two. Things have been going so good on this fast that I've decided to extend this fast from seven days to twenty-one days. Crazy, I know!

One of the reasons I decided to start this fast was because I was having so many problems with my allergies. Every night and every morning for the past few weeks I've been full of mucus-- throat, nose, eyes-- totally congested.  My throat and ears had been itching and I'd been feeling really bad. When I went on my first juice fast I remember that maybe four days in I had NO MUCUS!!!! I felt totally clear and for the first time ever I was waking up without eye boogers.  I loved it!  Last night I didn't have to take any allergy meds, I was able to get to sleep, and I noticed that I have less mucus but it's still here.

The one thing that did begin yesterday was the diarrhea. It wasn't really diarrhea, it was just one very watery, loose bowel movement. I expect more of them and I've actually decided that I will begin giving myself enemas every few days to help get the detoxification going.  While there are many reasons I embarked on this fast, the primary reason is DETOXIFICATION!!! I know that most of the mucus, inflammation and stomach problems that I have are all a direct result of my poor food choices and toxins. I will begin to detox in the Bikram studio in a few days. I really wanted to focus on the juice for the first few days and see how my body was adjusting before adding any exercise. I need the heat from the Bikram studio to assist in eliminating the toxins so that's my next step.

Let's see, what else for day two? Nothing much. I smelled some good food while I was out and about yesterday, (Famous Daves BBQ) and I wasn't tempted.  Day two was an overall good day.

7 Day Juice Fast

So it's been forever since I posted anything on this blog. There have been so many ups and downs with my health, diet, weight, and exercise. I'm trying my hand at this again because I think it will help with my accountability. Time will tell...

Yesterday, I started a seven day juice fast. I've done a seven day juice fast before but this one is a little different. In the past I prepared all of my juices for my fasts and at some point I became discouraged with the preparation or at least that's the excuse I gave myself. I decided to try something a little different this time around. I purchased a 7 day juice fast from Groupon for Khepra's Raw Food Juice Bar in Washington, DC  http://kheprasrawfoodjuicebar.com/     I picked up my juice for the first four days yesterday, (they wanted me to take three days of juice but I couldn't make it back until Wednesday) I'll go back on Wednesday and pick up the juice for the remaining three days. For this fast, I drink six, sixteen-ounce bottles of fresh fruit and vegetable juices and all of the water that I can stand.  So far, I'm behind a bit. Yesterday, I couldn't finish one bottle of juice. I just couldn't drink anymore but today I will do better. I will drink all of my juice and water. I will also drink the bottle I didn't have last night.

What have I noticed in the past 26 hours or so? I was really tired yesterday and today. I slept in
yesterday but today I made myself get up for prayer and then get up and straighten up the house, take care of my pug, take a quick walk and then get to work. It's Columbus day so my office was closed but I am worked remotely. Outside of being tired I had a slight headache yesterday and today and I've been craving something warm to drink. It's a gloomy, Fall day, cloudy and misty rain so I may be craving something warm and creamy because of the weather. I haven't noticed any other changes but it's only the second day. I decided to do this fast for a number of reasons and I know that in the end I'll feel and look better so I'm ready for the side effects of the detox. Recently, I've been really suffering from my allergies and I'm full of mucus. I know that I'll have some relief in a few short days so I'm sticking it out and if all goes as well as I think it will I will extend this fast.

ONE DAY DOWN SIX TO GO!!!!
